Think about the last big decision you made.
Were you choosing from the woman you used to be, the one trying to keep everyone comfortable, avoid conflict, and stay safe? Or were you choosing from the woman you’re becoming?
Most of us make choices from our past without even realizing it. Old fears, old roles, old expectations. We keep walking forward while looking over our shoulder.
This final step is about turning around and facing forward.
On my podcast, in the episode “Midlife Awakening: 5 Steps to Turn Upheaval Into Gold,” I shared the five steps I’ve used for 20 years to help women move through midlife shifts with more clarity and ease. In this series, I’ve been breaking down each step individually so you can go deeper and truly master it.
We’ve walked through Step 1, Radical Honesty, Step 2, Nervous System Softening, Step 3, Shadow Integration, and Step 4, Identity Re-Anchoring. Now we arrive at the final step, Step 5: Future Timeline Alignment.
This is where ease emerges
The first four steps can feel like hard, deep work. Telling yourself the truth. Learning to feel safe in your body. Welcoming back the parts you abandoned. Choosing who you’re becoming.
Step 5 is where it all starts coming together.
This is the moment crisis becomes clarity. The moment pain starts becoming purpose. Not because the hard feelings disappear, but because you finally begin to see what they were leading you toward.
What is future timeline alignment?
Future timeline alignment means making your choices from your future self, not your past self.
Your past self asks, “What’s expected of me? What’s safe? What will keep everyone happy?”
Your future self asks, “What supports the woman I’m becoming? What would she choose? What would she no longer carry?”
Every choice is a step down a path. When you choose from your past, you keep walking the same road. When you choose from your future, you begin walking toward the life that’s been calling you.
The six areas to align
In the episode, I described aligning your whole life with the woman you’re stepping into. Here’s how to look at each area.
1. Your relationships
Which relationships support who you’re becoming? Which ones pull you back into old roles? Alignment doesn’t mean cutting people off. It often means changing how you show up, what you share, and where you invest your time and energy.
2. Your habits
Look at your daily routines. Your mornings, your evenings, how you rest, what you consume. Would your future self keep these habits? What small change would she make first?
3. Your boundaries
Revisit your answers from Step 4 about what you no longer need to tolerate. Boundaries are how you protect the woman you’re becoming. They’re not walls. They’re the shape of your self-respect.
4. Your environment
Your spaces affect how you feel. Does your home reflect who you’re becoming? Sometimes alignment is as simple as clearing a corner for your morning ritual, letting go of things that belong to an old chapter, or bringing in colors, scents, and objects that feel like you.
5. Your emotional patterns
Notice your automatic reactions: shrinking, people-pleasing, over-explaining, holding it all in. When one shows up, pause and ask, “How would my future self respond here?” Then try responding that way, even imperfectly.
6. Your spiritual practices
What helps you feel connected to something deeper? Meditation, journaling, prayer, cacao ceremonies, time in nature, working with the moon cycles. Choose practices that nourish the woman you’re becoming, and make space for them regularly.
Honoring the grief
Here’s something important: stepping into your future doesn’t mean you won’t feel sad about what you’ve left behind.
You may still feel grief for the old life. For relationships that changed. For the years you spent living for everyone else. For the version of you who didn’t know she was allowed to want more.
That grief is real, and it deserves room. Moving forward doesn’t mean pretending the past didn’t matter. It means honoring it, and still choosing to walk on.
Over time, you begin to see that there was a purpose for all of it. Every ending made room. Every hard season taught you something. Every piece of your story led you here.
A guided practice: meeting your future self
This is adapted from the guided visualization I share at the end of the episode. Find a quiet space, soften your body, and take a few slow breaths.
Close your eyes and imagine you’re standing in a warm, quiet, dimly lit room. In front of you is a large, ancient door. This door represents the threshold between your old life and your new one.
Place your hand on it. Feel its warmth.
Behind you stand all the versions of yourself who carried you to this moment: the woman who survived, the woman who endured, the woman who loved, the woman who sacrificed, the woman who dreamed quietly. They’re not gone. They’re standing with you.
Now imagine a soft golden light rising from the floor, wrapping around your whole body. In your mind, speak these words:
I release what was never mine.
I reclaim what I lost.
I rise to who I truly am.
Feel the door begin to open. On the other side is your future self. She’s waiting. She’s ready. And she’s you.
When you open your eyes, take out your journal and write:
- What did my future self look and feel like?
- What is one message she has for me right now?
- What is one choice I can make this week to walk toward her?
Return to this practice anytime you feel pulled back into old patterns.
Stay aligned with your soul
As you begin making choices from your future self, keep coming back to the two truths that have guided us through every step:
- Will I always be proud of this?
- Would I want this done to me?
A future built on integrity is a future you’ll be proud to live in. When your choices pass both of these tests, you’ll know you’re aligned with your soul, not your ego.
A note of care
Big life transitions can bring up waves of emotion, even when you’re moving toward something good. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or alone, please reach out for support from a therapist, a trusted friend, or a guide who can walk beside you.
The five steps, together
Here’s the full journey we’ve taken through this series:
- Radical Honesty: Stop pretending not to know.
- Nervous System Softening: Make it safe to rise.
- Shadow Integration: Welcome the abandoned parts home.
- Identity Re-Anchoring: Choose who you’re becoming.
- Future Timeline Alignment: Live from where you’re going, not where you’ve been.
These steps aren’t a one-time checklist. Transformation moves in cycles. You may find yourself returning to Step 1 again and again as new truths rise. That’s not going backward. That’s going deeper.
You’re not late. You’re becoming.
If you’re in the middle of your alchemy right now, hear this: you’re not late. You’re not behind. You’re not broken.
You’re becoming.
Crisis isn’t the end of your story. It’s the moment you begin stepping into the story you were always meant to write.
You’re not breaking down. You’re breaking open, and the woman on the other side of that door is waiting for you.
You are the gold in the making.
